What does the police in Tokyo protect?

As the news of the Finance Ministry's public document-tampering, thousands of people gathered in front of the Prime Minister's official residence in Tokyo on the evening of March 16th to ask for resignation of the cabinet .

Anyway many policemen surrounded the people and forced them not be able to move. The police generated dangerous situation and several people were injured as results.

Japanese media do not report this situation. It means that democracy in Japan is on the brink of dying today.
I hope many international media will report.
